About Black Dog Bakery
A few words from the owner Louise and her cheif taster Dougal the LabradorIt will probably come as no surprise to learn that I own a Black Dog, a very happy and loveable black Labrador called Dougal.

My name is Louise and I established The Black Dog Bakery in the Spring of 2012, here's a little bit of our story.  Ever since Dougal was a puppy I have always experimented with making homemade treats for him.  I've always enjoyed baking, but research into the myriad of dog food options made my husband & I aware of the number of potential pitfalls around what you feed your dog and we became very conscious of the additives & preservatives in many mainstream foods and treats.  On the advice of our puppy trainer I first discovered the power of Liver Cake as a training aid in reward-based training and over time Dougal & I came to perfect our own recipe, which we called our Liver Fudge.

Gradually, a number of friends and other dog owners came to know that I made my own home-baked treats and began asking if I could make some for them too; perhaps inevitably the suggestions soon followed that I should set up a business and sell them.  The first day I took a stall at a local dog show with some bags of Liver Fudge was very nerve-wracking, not knowing whether people would want to buy it, but as soon as the dogs tasted the samples, it began to be snapped up... and we have never looked back since.

I am so lucky that I get to meet so many lovely people and their dogs through The Black Dog Bakery and every time I see a happy dog wagging his or her tail at the thought of one of our treats it makes me glad I turned on the oven that day and tried to create my own dog treats.

My Review (Da Impawtant One!)

Peanut Butter & Banana Muffins (Paw all you cheeky monkeys out there!)

Peanut Butter and Banana Muffins - Keep Refrigerated in an airtight container and use within 3 days or freeze and use within a month.

Firstly I tried the a Peanut Butter and Banana Muffins - I know what you are all thinking. Mmmm I wuff peanut butter but it always sticks to my mouth or my nosey! Do not fear, these aren't super sticky or messy, they are deliciously moist and flavoursome!  There's no artificial preservatives or nasties as mum likes to call them, they're all freshly made to order and so yummy it's unreal. They are shaped just like little muffins and the pawfect size for a treat, they look so light and fluffy and taste so good! Dey will deffo be a hit at Dog parties or as gifts to pals.

They are very soft and easy to chew, which is great for de older pooches. Yes, you guessed it. Derby got to sample them.  He plodded across and gwanny have him one of MY treats but seems as I'm such a kind pooch I let him. He had no problem chewing it, which is usually an issue with some treats due to his bad teeth. Tootsie also loved these, which is unusual for her as she normally only eats meats or meaty products. Mum says it is furry unusual that we all agree on one thing!

I deffo will get humum to get us some for our birthdays, they are so scrummy I really recommend all my pals try these - you will not be disappointed.

They contain : Plain and Wholemeal flour, Baking Powder, Peanut Butter, Egg, Milk, Banana, Oil and Honey.  As you can see dere is no nasties and are made up of the finest ingredients.

I'm glad the packet says "For Dogs Only" at the top, because grandad says they smell scrumptious! Don't worry pals, Gwanny has him trained so he never got any! Pheww.
Dese smell so yummy and I didn't get flour on me nosey!

Because they are super fresh and made from only the finest human grade ingredients, these delicious little bites of heaven have to be used within three days or frozen and used within a month. Remember to store them in an airtight container. I doubt very much dat you can have dese paw more than three days.... Ours were gone after day two and several puppy dog eyes and tricks!

Garlic Balls

Please do be warned pal, although dey is delicious dese is not good for dogsnogs, you may has garlic breath! So makes sure you brushes your pearly whites bepaw your dog dates!

These is so cute and treat size, but don't be fooled pals they are full of flavour! Mum opened the packet to show me what was inside and they smelled soooo good. Da next thing we knew, Derby and Tootsie had crowded around for a treat, don't worry I pushed dem to back of queue... I did my little sit and puppy eyes as you can see in the picture...and it worked! Yippeee.

Dey is soft but hardened a little in the fridge, so pawfect for any pooch and they have a bread texture when split so it was just like eating the real thing. I feel quite posh eating these, me and Derby shared these together. We was like Lady and the Tramp bol bol.

Garlic is known for being a repellent to fleas, so this is an excuse to get your humans to purchase some for you, mum also says it's an antiseptic and anti-repellent but I'll not bore you with all of that pals, all I know is it is tasty! I let mum tell you about that in her part of the blog, she not stealing my limelight here!

If you is a larger dog, there is an option in the shop to select a larger size, which will be pawfect for those big mouth pals of mine! BOL.
Ingredients : Flour, Brewer's Yeast, Garlic, Olive Oil and Water.
Yet again pals, dese treats are made to order, as they are fresh and contain no preservatives or additives they should be refrigerated in an airtight container and be consumed within five days of receiving or a month if frozen.

Cheese Bones

These sure get my approval! *drools*
OMD, I am a cheese addict! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw these. Cheese is in my DNA, it is by far my weakness! I knew I would have to be super good to try these!
I sat and never barked at the meerkats on the T.V adverts, never squeeked my froggy toy and never even chewed mums slippers. Phew, it was hard work but super worth it as I got to sample these seriously cheesy bones.

I got humum to open the sealed packet, which contains information on the ingredients and has the company logo on which is super cute. My paws were shaking with excitement and my tail was wagging super fast, I nearly fanned Derby away!
Inside the packet were the most pawfectly shaped bone treats, all were equal in size shape and colour and I knew just by the smell I was going to wuff these!

Mum never made me do a trick paw these as I was so fixated on them, she passed me one and I can not express how yummy and cheesy these are. They aren't stodgy, thick and claggy with cheese but are thin, even and super flavoursome!  They are nice and soft to break, which is yet again perfect for any dog.

I does have a confession... I did steal one when mum wasn't looking and did get in troubles pal. But I would recommend doing dis, cos dey is super nommy in my little tumtum!

Dey is super nommy and de pawfect size for a treat.
De Humum Review
An issue I usually find when selecting treats for the dogs is that although they might appear yummy - they're actually not treats at all. They can be full of additives, full of colourants, preservatives and 'nasties' as I like to call them. Derby used to be fed a leading brand, which caused serious problems to his skin condition, coat condition, digestion and even joint care. Since then, I love to know what exactly is in products we give to our pooches, and I'm sure you'll agree - we only want what is best for them.

The Black Dog Bakery produces their wonderful range of treats fresh to order, which means no product is jam packed with preservatives - and you know everything is fresh! The great thing about the products is that you are able to freeze them and use within a month - which is perfect if you have occasional dog guests!

I adore The Black Dog Bakerys philosophy -' If we wouldn't eat it ourselves, then we wouldn't feed it to our dog.' This enables us to have peace of mind that every ingredient used in the treats offered are the best human-grade ingredients, baked well to their famous tried and tested recipes.

I was glad they included instructions on how to store and advised on how soon the product should be consumed in. This made it easy to know which treats to give first and enabled me to have no treats wasted. ( Not that there is much chance in this house with Nellie and Derby hoovering every single crumb up.)

As these products are not complete dog food and are intended to be given as treats or rewards, the company recommends that you take note fo the amount of treats your dog is given and then reduce their next meal accordingly. Please make sure when feeding that your dog has ample fresh water available at all times.

Nellie, Derby and Tootsie adored all of the products, which were amazingly presented in 'pawjuss' little white bags sealed for freshness. The bags clearly label what the product is, what ingredients have been used and when the product should be used by.  I must admit it is a good job they say 'For Dogs Only' as the Peanut Butter and Banana muffins smelled divine!

Each bag has a clear window so you can see what is inside, and all products were made with precision... all the same size, colour, texture! This product definitely looks and I presume tastes, by Nellie's addiction!, like a product on the higher end of the dog market - yet at a fraction of the high end price!
